YOU GOTTA TRY THIS!!!![]() 11/9/03
I AM A BIG EATER AND KNOW A BIT ABOUT FRESHNESS AND ORIENTAL DELICACIES. OKIYAMA FILLS THAT VOID! IT IS SMALL, COZY, DELIGHTFULLY DECORATED, FAMILY OWNED, AND THE FOLKS THERE CARE ABOUT YOU! CAN YOU IMAGINE!!! AND THE OWNERS ARE BOTH KNOWLEDGABLE AND WORLDLY AND DECENT, GOOD FOLKS.
THE FOOD? YES! YES! YEEEESSS!!! AND THAT IS MOVE YOU CAN DO IN ECSTACY. |
Sashimi Tsunami![]() 11/10/03
When you first hear of the "North Heights", it is hard to know what to make of it. More realtor dazzle? As it happens, this is a contained and delimited corner of Brooklyn, a gem at the very western extreme of Long Island. There are surprisingly many restaurants of some quality, all on or just off Henry Street. Among the more engaging is modest, excellent Okiyama. It is at the exit from the Clark Street IRT station & thus sits at the center of things. As it ought to! You get a nice feeling on entering, and the really nifty food arrives speedily. These are some of the best big roll creations we have ever seen, and - we go to Asia a lot - there is no compromise in the authentic, home-grown Nipponese feel. You have to pay big yen elsewhere to eat sushi & sashimi on this level. We and friends will be back. Soon. |
Oh Those Special Rolls!![]() 11/10/03
A small space and homey atmosphere don't usually give rise to expectations of culinary delight. But Okiyama has a secret weapon in their sushi chef. The sushi and sashimi are fresh and excellent, but the special rolls are divine. Or even better, toss aside the menu and let the sushi chef prepare whatever his inspiration of the moment commends. Friendly, warm atmosphere and nice music top it all off. |
Would you like to feel like home?![]() 11/11/03
Okiyama is the place. |
great small place![]() 12/15/03
I love this little restaurant. It's unusual location, right at the clark street exit subway station, make it even greater. In fact, nothing is more convenient for someone like me who, after a long working day, want to relax having some good sushi. |

Sashimi and Sushi, Tokyo-style![]() //
This unassuming little place serves some of the very best sashimi and sushi in New York City, prepared Tokyo-style - unpretentious, yet elegant and graceful. One might never suspect such a modest source for such sophisticated gastronomy. If you are tired of restaurants where the atmosphere is more important than the food, and would like a quiet place with a gracious staff "where everybody knows your name," and where what counts most is the food, the food, the food ... then this is the place for you.
Okiyama is still a bit of a secret, but more people are beginning to know about it. As well they should. |
